Andrea Stella: McLaren's Reliability Boost in Barcelona Offers Hope for Future

Andrea Stella is optimistic about McLaren's performance after a strong showing in Barcelona, citing improved reliability as a key factor. However, he acknowledges there's still work to be done to close the gap with top competitors.

Andrea Stella has shared his insights on McLaren's current standing after the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, highlighting a notable improvement in reliability. After a turbulent few rounds, Lando Norris' podium finish in Spain was a welcome sight for the team. Previously, Norris had faced retirements due to reliability issues in both Canada and Monaco, leaving McLaren uncertain about their true competitive position. But Barcelona, often seen as a bellwether for the season's pace, was encouraging as Norris secured a fourth-place start and capitalized on Kimi Antonelli's misfortune to finish third. Stella remarked on the relatively trouble-free weekend, emphasizing the strides made in reliability. "It's good that we haven't had any issues here in Spain," he said, noting the importance of maintaining these standards moving forward. The focus now shifts to performance, with McLaren aiming to close the gap with rivals Mercedes and Ferrari. While pleased with their ability to keep pace with Mercedes, Stella acknowledged Ferrari's recent upgrades that propelled Lewis Hamilton to a Grand Prix victory. McLaren's task is clear: improve car performance, particularly in medium-speed corners where Ferrari currently excels. Both Norris and Oscar Piastri finished in the points, with McLaren now sitting third in the standings, trailing Ferrari by 49 points. Stella conceded that, despite the positive outcome, the performance gap remains significant. Addressing these challenges involves enhancing aerodynamic performance and better tire management, particularly in qualifying. As the team prepares for the next round in Austria, Stella's focus is firmly on these performance enhancements, aiming to build on the reliability successes achieved in Barcelona.
