Toto Wolff Confirms Mercedes' Response with Upgrades for Canada

Mercedes' Toto Wolff announces the team's first upgrade package for the Canadian Grand Prix, aiming to keep pace with rivals. Despite leading both championships, Wolff acknowledges the need to respond to recent competitive gains by McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has outlined the team's strategy ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, where they'll debut their first upgrade package of the season. As the Silver Arrows prepare for Montreal, Wolff admits that Mercedes "need to respond" after noticing their competitors' progress in Miami. Despite maintaining an early lead in both championships, the margin between Mercedes and their rivals seemed to narrow last time out, with McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari all rolling out updates.

Kimi Antonelli's recent victory in Miami extended his lead over teammate George Russell by 20 points, yet Wolff stresses that maintaining their competitive edge is crucial. "Our competitors took a step forward in Miami, and we need to respond," Wolff said, previewing the upcoming race weekend. "With seven Grands Prix in 10 weekends before the summer break, it's a prime opportunity to gain momentum."

Mercedes will bring their first update package of the year to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, but Wolff remains pragmatic, noting that "performance is only performance once it is delivered on track." While the team aims to shine in Canada, Wolff also emphasizes the importance of continual learning as the season unfolds. "Even though we're in May, we've only completed four races," he remarked. "It's a long season, and while this weekend is important, it won't be decisive."

Wolff maintains that the team must stay grounded and focused, balancing their approach and learning from each race. "We won't get too high when we succeed or too low in challenging times; this applies to our drivers and the entire team," he concluded.

As Mercedes prepares to tackle the Canadian Grand Prix with fresh upgrades, the paddock will be watching closely to see if the Silver Arrows can maintain their lead against a tightening field.
