Racing Bulls' Unusual Upgrade Strategy Amid Unexpected Break

Racing Bulls is navigating an unexpected April lull with a unique upgrade plan. Team Principal Alan Permane discusses how the team aims to handle upcoming races in Miami and Montreal.

Racing Bulls' Team Principal, Alan Permane, has shed light on the team's peculiar upgrade strategy during an unusual break in the racing calendar. The team, currently seventh in the standings and nipping at the heels of Red Bull, faces an unexpected pause as neither the Bahrain nor Saudi Arabian Grands Prix are happening this April.

Originally, Racing Bulls planned to debut a significant upgrade in Bahrain, but those plans were pushed to Miami, which has created a somewhat odd scenario. "We had a pretty decent upgrade planned for Bahrain, which of course we will see in Miami," Permane shared. "But we'll almost replace it immediately for the next round in Montreal due to the way the calendar has unfolded."

The Faenza squad is using this downtime to conduct some unplanned work on the chassis, advancing upgrades initially slated for later in the season. Despite the tight midfield competition with teams like Alpine, Haas, and Audi, Racing Bulls drivers have managed to score points in every race so far, thanks partly to other teams' reliability woes.

In addition to the Miami and Montreal updates, Permane mentioned that bringing the upgrade to Miami means having more sets available than originally planned for Bahrain. "We may have only had one or two sets ready for Bahrain, but now we'll have three or four for Miami," he noted, highlighting the silver lining in this scheduling shuffle.

Despite scoring in all three Grands Prix and the Shanghai Sprint, Permane admits his drivers have exceeded expectations, especially considering the team's late-season development last year. "We expected to start a little bit on the back foot, but I also expect that what we've got coming soon will lift us into the thick of the midfield battle," he said confidently.

Racing Bulls' plan involves small incremental improvements at almost every race, punctuated by two or three larger upgrades throughout the season. With a clear roadmap ahead, Permane is optimistic that Racing Bulls can maintain, if not improve, their position within the midfield pack.
