Franco Colapinto's Dream Drive: F1 on the Streets of Buenos Aires

Franco Colapinto fulfilled a childhood dream by driving an F1 car in Buenos Aires, marking a historic moment for Argentinian motorsport. The event drew a massive local crowd, giving Colapinto a chance to connect with home fans who rarely see F1 in person.

Franco Colapinto recently made history as the first Argentinian to navigate an F1 car through the streets of Buenos Aires. For Colapinto, this was not just a professional milestone but a personal dream come true. "It was one of my dreams to drive in Argentina," he shared, reflecting on the significance of the event.

The spectacle involved Colapinto piloting the 2012 Lotus E20, now adorned in Alpine's colors, and a replica of Juan Manuel Fangio’s legendary Mercedes W196. An impressive crowd of approximately 600,000 fans gathered to witness the event, where Colapinto showcased high-speed runs and burnouts, bringing the roar of F1 engines to his hometown.

Colapinto expressed his gratitude, noting, "To bring a Formula 1 car to my country was something I really wanted to do since I was a kid." The support from Alpine and the sheer number of fans made the day especially memorable. "It was really exciting for everyone," he added, emphasizing how the sound of the engine and the thrill of the burnouts resonated even with those at the back of the crowd.

The event was more than just a public showcase; it was a personal reunion. "To spend some time with my family and to have the chance to see them next to me whilst I was driving was really cool," Colapinto said. Family and friends, including his grandmother, were present, making it an unforgettable experience.

The road show, titled _Mercado Libre presents: Franco Colapinto Road Show Buenos Aires 2026_, was a rare opportunity for local fans who typically find it challenging to attend Grands Prix due to their distance. "It’s really hard for any Argentinian fan to come to Europe or even Miami or Brazil," Colapinto acknowledged, highlighting the significance of bringing F1 to them.

He continued, "Instead of them coming to me to see me race, I came to them." Colapinto hopes this event is a step towards hosting a race weekend in Argentina, a dream for many local fans. Driving Fangio's Mercedes W196 added a historical touch, connecting the past and present of Argentinian motorsport.

Colapinto is now looking to channel the positive energy from Buenos Aires into the upcoming Miami Grand Prix. The break leading up to Miami has been productive, with Colapinto and his team focusing on simulations and preparations. "I think generally it’s been a positive break," he said, hopeful for a strong performance.

Returning to Argentina between races was a rare luxury for Colapinto, who usually visits during the off-season. "To have the chance to go between races and spend some time with them and get that energy and vibe from the Argentinians was something I am not used to," he admitted. This recharge seems timely as he gears up for Miami, ready to put on another show, albeit on a more traditional racing stage.
