Alpine Welcomes Back Jason Somerville as Deputy Technical Director

Alpine has appointed Jason Somerville as their new Deputy Technical Director, strengthening their technical team. Somerville brings extensive experience from roles at Williams, Toyota, and the FIA.

Alpine is reinforcing its technical leadership with the return of Jason Somerville, who takes on the role of Deputy Technical Director. Somerville is no stranger to the Enstone-based team, having been a pivotal part of its Aerodynamics Department during the Renault years back in 2010-2011.

His journey in Formula 1 began with Williams in 1999, followed by a significant stint at Toyota starting in 2003, where he climbed to Deputy Head of Aerodynamics. After his initial tenure at Enstone, Somerville went back to Williams to lead their aerodynamics efforts, before moving on to influential roles at Formula One Management and the FIA, where he contributed to the 2022 technical regulations.

Somerville officially stepped into his new role at Alpine on May 15, under the guidance of Executive Technical Director David Sanchez. He expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining a team environment, highlighting the thrill of "hunting milliseconds" and competing for valuable points and trophies.

"I am really excited to be returning to Enstone and working with Flavio, Steve, and David in this new role," Somerville remarked. "I have been away from the competitive side of motorsport within a team environment for a few years now and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back in the thick of it."

David Sanchez also shared his excitement about the new appointment, noting that Somerville's experience will be invaluable as Alpine continues its upward trajectory this season. "The work the team has already done this season has been extraordinary," Sanchez stated, "Adding Jason to our technical team will allow us to take even further steps to better our performance in the latest Formula 1 development race."

After a tough last-place finish in the 2025 Teams’ Championship, Alpine has bounced back admirably. With 23 points from the first four races of 2026, they're currently sitting comfortably in fifth place, reflecting a promising start under the new regulations.
