Hamilton Praises Antonelli After Losing Silverstone Sprint Battle

Lewis Hamilton found himself conceding victory to Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli during the Sprint at Silverstone, despite starting from pole. The Ferrari driver, after a stellar qualifying performance that edged Antonelli by a mere 0.011 seconds, couldn't keep the championship leader at bay for long. Antonelli claimed his first Sprint victory, crossing the line 2.745 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Reflecting on the race, Hamilton remarked, "I gave it absolutely everything. With the strong headwind down the back straight, Kimi just came flying past. We’ve got work to do to close that gap." Energy management was pivotal, as Hamilton noted, "Mercedes were particularly quick up to Turn 6, so sometimes I had to use the Boost there. Once he got into Overtake mode, I couldn’t keep him outside the one-second gap anymore."

Despite the defeat, Hamilton, holder of nine British Grand Prix wins at Silverstone, remained upbeat. "It’s never fun to go back, but we were right in the fight, which was unexpected. I’m really happy with the team’s effort to close the gap. We’re getting closer, but not quite there yet," he said.

Meanwhile, his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, had a sluggish start and finished fifth. Leclerc admitted, "It was a very poor start. There are still things I’m not comfortable with, but I’m making progress. I feel like I saw a few things that I’ll be able to change for Qualifying."

Both drivers remain hopeful for improvements in Saturday's Qualifying and Sunday's Grand Prix. Leclerc added, "If the changes work in Qualifying, I’m optimistic it’s something I can carry over to other tracks. It’s a bit of a philosophical change to the car to suit my driving style better."
