McLaren's New Upgrade Path: When to Expect Results

Andrea Stella, McLaren's Team Principal, has laid out a new course for the team's upgrade strategy, acknowledging that the British Grand Prix weekend was less than stellar, despite Lando Norris securing a podium in the Sprint and a respectable fourth in the main race. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri faced a frustrating race, finishing 11th after a first-lap incident.

Stella admitted that McLaren's MCL40 was trailing behind Ferrari and Mercedes, with Norris' fourth place being more a result of others' misfortunes than raw pace. "Our performance today mirrored our qualifying," Stella said, noting a significant gap to their rivals. The team, once praised for its timely upgrades, now finds itself playing catch-up.

Last season's title fight, where Norris edged out Max Verstappen, stretched McLaren's resources, impacting the 2026 car's development. "Being so involved in the championship meant we couldn't focus entirely on upgrades," Stella explained. The team had to maintain performance without major advancements.

Now, McLaren is rethinking its approach, particularly in aerodynamics, as it gets a better grasp of the 2026 regulations. Stella acknowledged that these changes take time. "Redirecting our development focus isn't an overnight task," he said, estimating a couple of months' delay.

Stella anticipates the first fruits of this new strategy will appear at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with more updates to follow after the summer break. "We aim to close the gap with our next upgrades," he said, confident that the team now has a clearer direction in aerodynamic development.

The goal is to deliver short-term and mid-term upgrades and keep pace with competitors, ensuring McLaren doesn't get left behind in the championship race. "Ideally, we'll be able to implement upgrades continuously as we approach the latter part of the season," Stella concluded, hopeful for a more competitive McLaren in the coming months.
