Andrea Stella Applauds Oscar Piastri's Resilience Amid Early 2026 Challenges

Oscar Piastri's resilience in the face of early-season setbacks has earned him high praise from McLaren's Andrea Stella. Despite a rocky start, Piastri's mental strength has been a motivational force for the team.

Oscar Piastri's mental fortitude has been a beacon of motivation for the McLaren team, according to their team principal Andrea Stella. Piastri's resilience was put to the test after missing out on both the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix at the start of the 2026 season. In Australia, Piastri faced the disappointment of crashing on his way to the grid in front of his home crowd in Melbourne. The following race in China saw a double DNS for McLaren, with issues stemming from their Mercedes power unit batteries.

Stella was particularly impressed with how Piastri handled these setbacks. "This start of the season has given Oscar the chance to test his maturity and strength," Stella remarked at the Japanese Grand Prix. "The team is so impressed by his response, which has been extremely motivational for all of us."

Despite these early challenges, Piastri demonstrated his potential by qualifying third at Suzuka. He even led the race at the start, fending off George Russell's Mercedes during the initial laps. Though a mistimed Safety Car period saw him finish 13.7 seconds behind race winner Kimi Antonelli, Piastri's performance was a significant milestone.

Stella also commented on the partnership between Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris. Their collaboration, despite being rivals in the 2025 title race, reflects the values McLaren cherishes. "Their mutual respect is evident," Stella said. "It’s a testament to both their characters and what we stand for as a team."

With a challenging start behind him, Piastri's 2026 campaign is now gaining momentum, bringing optimism to McLaren as they aim to challenge the likes of Mercedes.
