Verstappen Uncertain About Red Bull's Prospects at Barcelona

Max Verstappen remains cautious about Red Bull's performance at the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, citing uncertainties with the car under different conditions. Meanwhile, teammate Isack Hadjar is optimistic, drawing parallels with previous circuit experiences.

As Red Bull heads into the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, Max Verstappen is playing his cards close to his chest. Despite recent podium finishes—Verstappen in Canada and his teammate Isack Hadjar in Monaco—the Dutch driver remains uncertain about how the car will perform on this more conventional circuit with expected high temperatures.

"There are still so many unknowns for us," Verstappen commented during Thursday's media day. He highlighted the importance of practice sessions to understand how the RB22 will handle the warmer weather and to get a grip on the tyre performance. His cautious optimism is understandable, given the team's varied results in different conditions so far.

Verstappen also mentioned that he'll be running a new engine this weekend after a misstep in Monaco prevented him from capitalizing on his front row start. "Monaco didn’t have the ending that we wanted, but life goes on," he remarked, shrugging off the setback.

For Hadjar, the outlook is a bit more upbeat. The Frenchman, who joined Red Bull at the start of the season, is fresh off his second career podium and is eager to see how upgrades to the car will translate at Barcelona. Drawing comparisons to Suzuka, where he finished 12th and Verstappen 8th, Hadjar is hopeful that improvements will yield better results this time around.

"You go into this weekend expecting similar performance to a track like Japan," Hadjar explained, noting the high-speed corners and energy demands. "Since then, we’ve had upgrades on the car, and we made sure when we come back to these types of tracks, we’re feeling better. Tomorrow we’ll know more."

Overall, while there is a cautious tone in Verstappen's comments, Red Bull's recent momentum and strategic upgrades suggest that they may yet surprise in Spain.
