Ralf Schumacher believes Charles Leclerc isn't a fit for Red Bull, despite growing speculation about Max Verstappen's future. Schumacher notes Red Bull's current instability and Ferrari's need to retain Leclerc as reasons against the move.
As the motorsport world buzzes with rumors about Max Verstappen's future in Formula 1, Ralf Schumacher has poured cold water on the idea of Charles Leclerc stepping into the Red Bull cockpit. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, is contracted with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season. Yet, he's been openly critical of F1's new regulations, likening them to "Mario Kart" antics, and suggesting his days in the sport might be numbered.
Verstappen’s frustrations have sparked questions about who might replace him should he choose to depart. While Red Bull's junior program has produced talents like Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad, neither seems poised to fill Verstappen's shoes just yet. This has led some to speculate about Ferrari's Charles Leclerc as a potential candidate.
However, speaking on Sky Deutschland’s podcast, Schumacher addressed the Leclerc-to-Red Bull rumors. He sees two major hurdles: Red Bull's current state and Ferrari's vested interest in keeping Leclerc. "Red Bull isn’t the obvious choice right now," Schumacher said, pointing out the team's internal chaos and lack of clear communication, especially with Dr. Helmut Marko no longer providing his distinctive guidance.
Moreover, Ferrari is likely keen to retain Leclerc, a driver in his eighth season with the team, despite only eight career wins. His manager, Nicholas Todt, had previously hinted at possible moves if results didn’t improve, though Leclerc has expressed his commitment to winning with Ferrari.
Schumacher believes Ferrari needs to focus on developing young talent and maintaining stability rather than losing Leclerc to a team still finding its footing in a new era. "It wouldn’t be very clever," he noted, highlighting the need for Ferrari to prepare for the future by holding onto their Monegasque star.
The speculation continues, but Schumacher’s comments suggest that, for now, Leclerc to Red Bull is not on the cards.
