Fred Vasseur Reacts to Toto Wolff's Remarks on Ferrari's Cost Cap Strategy

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari's Team Principal, has offered his perspective on recent comments made by Mercedes' Toto Wolff. Wolff hinted that Ferrari might soon hit the cost cap, given their consistent roll-out of upgrades. This conversation comes just before the British Grand Prix, where eyes are on Ferrari's performance.

During the Austrian Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced more upgrades, including a modified power unit. However, these changes didn't translate into podium finishes, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Wolff, speaking to F1 TV after the event, remarked, "Ferrari have been throwing things at their car massively. I guess they will be running out of cost cap soon, because we couldn’t do it, because we simply haven’t got the margin financially. Let’s see where that leads them."

In response, Vasseur couldn't resist a touch of irony. "I found it quite ironic from Toto, coming from Toto and Mercedes," he remarked. "When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing, they are genius. When we are developing, we are cheating. I think you have to calm down with this, that we didn't bring more parts than Red Bull or another team. I don't know if it was a joke."

Hamilton, now with Ferrari, secured his first victory for the team in Barcelona, marking the only non-Mercedes win in a Grand Prix this season. As the team heads to Silverstone, they remain Mercedes' closest competitors. Hamilton also set the pace in the one-hour practice session before Sprint Qualifying, indicating Ferrari's potential to challenge Mercedes this weekend.

Vasseur, when asked if he had discussed Wolff's remarks with him, suggested it's often better not to engage. "I think it was better to avoid to speak," he said. He also emphasized the importance of early upgrades. "More performance you can bring at the beginning, that we are all in the same boat," Vasseur noted during the Team Representative's press conference. "If we can bring something at the beginning we do it, and it's better to have a couple of tenths for five races than just a couple of tenths for the last two. Sometimes it's difficult to find performance. Sometimes you can have the feeling you're bringing a big upgrade but it is just the modification of some parts."

As the British Grand Prix looms, the strategic dance between upgrades and cost management continues to be a hot topic, especially with the competitive tension between Ferrari and Mercedes.
