Kimi Antonelli Takes Pole at 2026 British Grand Prix Qualifying

Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes has secured pole position for the British Grand Prix, marking his fifth pole of the 2026 season. In a tightly contested qualifying session, Antonelli's final lap of 1m 28.111s proved unbeatable, keeping Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at bay. Leclerc was close behind, missing out by just 0.175s, while Hamilton will start his home race from third. Mercedes teammate George Russell, who briefly held provisional pole, ended up in fourth.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar impressed by leading the team's charge to fifth place, while Lando Norris secured sixth for McLaren. Max Verstappen, seemingly unhappy with his Red Bull's handling, was seventh, followed by McLaren's Oscar Piastri in eighth. The Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson completed the top ten.

Qualifying was not without drama. George Russell endured a minor off-track excursion in Q1, raising questions about potential damage to his car. Meanwhile, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto narrowly missed Q3, finishing 11th, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly, who faces a post-session investigation for impeding, claimed 12th.

Further back, the likes of Haas' Ollie Bearman and the Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon struggled, securing 14th to 16th positions. Esteban Ocon, summoned for failing to slow for yellow flags, ended in 17th, just ahead of Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas.

The final segment of qualifying saw Antonelli capitalizing on his fast middle sector to cement his pole position. Despite Leclerc's improvements, Antonelli's time stood firm. The Italian expressed some pre-run nerves but was satisfied with his tidy final lap, especially given the gusty conditions.

With the grid now set, all eyes turn to Sunday's race at Silverstone, where Antonelli hopes to convert his pole into victory.
