Pirelli's 2026 Tyre Strategy for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix

The 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix will feature a softer tyre selection from Pirelli, with C2, C3, and C4 compounds. Teams will strategize around high temperatures and abrasive track conditions.

With the Formula 1 circus moving from Monaco to Barcelona for the seventh race of the year, attention turns to the tyres Pirelli has chosen for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This time, the tyre supplier has opted for a softer set than usual, selecting the C2 compound for the hard tyres, C3 for the mediums, and C4 for the softs. The track, known for high temperatures and abrasive asphalt, will test the durability of these tyres.

Each driver will have access to two sets of hard tyres, marked in white, three sets of mediums in yellow, and a generous allocation of eight sets of soft tyres, marked in red. As usual, the green intermediate and blue full wet tyres are on standby should the weather take a turn. Those making it to Q3 in qualifying will receive an extra set of soft tyres to play with. During the race, drivers must use at least two different slicks if conditions remain dry.

Pirelli's preview notes the return to Barcelona-Catalunya, a circuit that hosted pre-season testing in January, marking the debut of the season's heavily revised cars. While the Spanish Grand Prix has traditionally taken place earlier in the season, its delay this year is expected to result in higher track temperatures.

The 4.657-kilometre track, featuring 14 corners and demanding lateral forces, particularly stresses the left tyres due to its nine right-handers. Notably, turns 3 and the final corners, reprofiled a few years ago, will challenge tyre performance. The abrasive surface and high thermal degradation mean teams will need strategic finesse to manage tyre wear, particularly on the front axle.

Barcelona is always a hotspot for car upgrades, and this weekend is no exception. Teams might bring developments, including potential changes to wheel rims, affecting heat exchange crucial for tyre and brake performance. With past test data from January, teams have a benchmark to measure this weekend's performance.

After the race, Pirelli remains in Barcelona for a two-day slick tyre test, with Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Cadillac participating. These tests are crucial for developing future compounds and will provide valuable insights.
