Nico Hulkenberg's hopes for a top-10 finish at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix were dashed in an unexpected turn of events. The Audi driver was forced to retire mid-race due to an unusual incident involving gravel.
Hulkenberg, yet to score points this season, seemed poised to break that streak as he held a strong position in the top 10, battling with Liam Lawson for ninth place. However, during this tussle on Lap 28, Lawson ran wide at Turn 12, sending gravel flying into the path of Hulkenberg's car. In a rare occurrence, some of that gravel hit the safety fire switch on Hulkenberg's car, triggering an emergency shutdown of the R26.
The German driver had no choice but to coast into the pits and retire from the race. Reflecting on the incident, Hulkenberg said, "It was a very unusual and unfortunate retirement. Liam ran slightly wide and kicked up gravel, which hit our car and triggered the emergency switch, shutting everything down instantly. It's incredibly frustrating because we were in a good position to score points."
Audi Racing Director Allan McNish echoed Hulkenberg's sentiments, describing the incident as a frustrating end to a promising weekend. "Nico's car shut down after gravel from Lawson's car struck the safety fire switch, triggering an automatic safety function," McNish explained. "Unfortunately, that was the end of his race."
Despite the setback, Audi can take some solace in their overall pace throughout the weekend. Hulkenberg noted that the team showed competitive speed and had genuine opportunities for a strong result. His teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, finished just outside the points in 11th place, while rivals Racing Bulls and Alpine both managed to score.
Hulkenberg concluded, "We leave with nothing to show for this weekend, but this was a case of bad luck rather than any performance or reliability issues." While Audi may have lost ground to their midfield competitors in Barcelona, they can still draw positives from the weekend's performance.
