He was in second at one point, but a late-race Safety Car and an ill-timed pit stop saw Mercedes' George Russell leapfrog him.
After the race, Hamilton was candid about his chances of further penalties. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, he said, "I’m probably going to get a penalty right now as well. I went through a yellow flag and I didn’t it. Jumped the start, yellow flag – when it rains, it pours."
The stewards' report clarified the situation: Hamilton "failed to slow for a single yellow flag at Turn 9 on Lap 38." He entered the sector before the flag was displayed, and his steering wheel indicated the yellow too late for a timely reaction. His attention was also divided, focused on a potential counterattack from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
The stewards noted that while Hamilton didn't slow significantly after the yellow indicator appeared, his visibility was limited, and his focus was on defensive driving. However, they concluded he didn't fully comply with the rules, hence the reprimand.
Reflecting on the race, Hamilton described it as "a bit of a blur." He lamented the decision to pit during the Safety Car, which cost him track position without the expected tyre advantage. He admitted, "We did what we thought was right," but acknowledged the gamble didn't pay off.
Despite the setbacks, Hamilton congratulated teammate Charles Leclerc on his victory. He admitted to struggling with front-end grip throughout the weekend, saying, "All the magic that I had on Friday just disappeared."
In the end, it was a day of mixed emotions for Hamilton: a podium achieved through grit, but a reminder that even seasoned champions have days when everything doesn't quite click.
