Allan McNish has been appointed as Audi's Racing Director, solidifying his long-standing relationship with the brand. This move comes as Audi reorganizes its leadership following Jonathan Wheatley's departure.
In a reshuffle at Audi's Formula 1 team, Allan McNish has been named the new Racing Director, taking the reins of trackside operations starting from the Miami Grand Prix. This marks a significant move for the German manufacturer as they adjust their leadership structure after Jonathan Wheatley departed as Team Principal less than a year into his tenure.
Audi, which has integrated the Sauber team as its factory outfit for their F1 debut, has chosen to promote from within. McNish, who made 17 starts in F1 with Toyota back in 2002, will now report to CEO and Team Principal Mattia Binotto. His long-standing involvement with Audi's motorsport endeavors, including the F1 project, makes this a natural progression.
Previously, McNish has served in various roles within Audi, including as director of coordination for Audi Group Motorsport and Team Principal of their Formula E team. Notably, he also heads Audi's Driver Development Programme, a role he will continue alongside his new responsibilities.
McNish's remit as Racing Director will cover sporting matters, engineering coordination, driver management, race strategy, and garage operations, along with on-track media and partner activities. His extensive experience in endurance racing, highlighted by multiple Le Mans victories and a World Endurance Championship title, brings a wealth of expertise to his new position.
"Allan brings an exceptional combination of racing experience, technical understanding, and leadership to this role," said Binotto. "He has been a central part of Audi's motorsport structure for many years and has been integral in shaping our preparation for Formula 1. His ability to connect all performance-related areas will be fundamental as we continue to build our team."
McNish expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "It is a privilege to take on the role of Racing Director for Audi Revolut F1 Team. This is an exciting challenge at a pivotal moment in the history of Audi and Formula 1, and I am looking forward to contributing even more directly to our trackside performance."
With McNish focusing on trackside leadership, Binotto can direct his full attention to Audi's first-ever Formula 1 power unit and the team's broader ambitions. Audi aims to be competitive enough to vie for world titles by 2030, and McNish's appointment is a step toward realizing that goal.
As Lawrence Barretto notes, Wheatley's unexpected departure left a gap that Audi has taken its time to fill. Binotto initially covered Wheatley's duties, but it was clear that a more traditional structure was needed. McNish's deep ties to Audi make him a fitting choice, as he is well-regarded within the team and by the Audi board. His transition into the new role is expected to be smooth, ensuring continuity and stability as Audi continues its ambitious journey in Formula 1.
