Sergio Perez, back in F1 with Cadillac, believes he's among the top drivers but stresses the importance of having the right conditions to showcase talent. After a challenging stint with Red Bull, Perez is optimistic about Cadillac's prospects in Monaco.
Sergio Perez, who has returned to Formula 1 with the new Cadillac team after a year away, recently commented on his status as "one of the best" drivers in the sport. The Mexican driver, now 36, emphasized that showcasing talent effectively requires the right circumstances. "When you look at my last six months at Red Bull, you wouldn't think that I'm one of the best out there," Perez explained. "But when you understand the circumstances at that point, and the people that understand performance at the end of the day," he said, hinting at the complexities behind his previous struggles.
Perez's tenure at Red Bull was a mixed bag, netting five Grand Prix victories and a second-place finish in the 2023 Drivers' Championship, trailing only his teammate Max Verstappen. However, a lack of podium finishes in the subsequent season led to his exit from the team. After a year on the sidelines, Perez's return with Cadillac marks a fresh chapter. His recent comments came as he reflected on his comeback, saying he was "happy I came back" to the sport.
His optimism was bolstered by a relatively strong performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished P11 in the Sprint before a penalty pushed him to P14. Unfortunately, his Grand Prix was cut short by a suspension failure while running in P15. Despite these setbacks, Perez sees the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix as a potential turning point for Cadillac, describing it as their "biggest chance" to climb the grid.
"Internally we are really optimistic about this weekend," Perez stated confidently. "Monaco always gives you an opportunity to shine, and that will be the biggest opportunity for us." He highlighted the importance of performing well in Friday's sessions to set a positive tone for the weekend. With the glitz and tight corners of Monte Carlo ahead, Perez aims to capitalize on the unique opportunities the circuit presents, aiming for a flawless operational execution.
As the Cadillac team gears up for Monaco, all eyes will be on whether Perez can indeed demonstrate that he's among the best, given the right conditions. For now, his focus remains on maximizing the team's efforts and seizing any chance to move up the field.
