Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg discuss Allan McNish's promotion to Racing Director at Audi. Both drivers express confidence in McNish's extensive experience and leadership skills.
Audi's drivers, Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg, recently shared their thoughts on Allan McNish stepping into the role of Racing Director. Bortoleto is optimistic, predicting an 'incredible job' from the Scotsman.
Following Jonathan Wheatley's unexpected exit as Team Principal in March, Audi reassessed their leadership structure. They decided to elevate McNish, a seasoned member of the German manufacturer's ranks. McNish, who raced in Formula 1 for Toyota in 2002, later found success with Audi in endurance racing, including two Le Mans victories. He's been involved in leadership roles within Audi, notably as Team Principal of their Formula E team.
Currently, he also leads Audi's Driver Development Programme, a role he will maintain alongside his new responsibilities in Formula 1.
During Thursday's media day at the Miami Grand Prix—McNish's first weekend in his new position—Bortoleto commented, 'Allan has been part of Audi for many years. He won Le Mans, was part of the management team in Formula E, and now he’s here with us in Formula 1. He’s been in many roles within this team, so I’m not worried about him fitting in. He’s part of the family.'
Bortoleto added, 'Having an ex-F1 driver as a sounding board is invaluable. There are no doubts about his achievements—he’s a legend in the sport and at Audi. It’s good to have him as Racing Director.'
Nico Hulkenberg also praised McNish’s vast experience, noting, 'Allan's been with Audi for a very long time and has been involved in the F1 project from the start. His experience as a former driver, especially in F1, makes him well-suited for this role, and I look forward to working closely with him.'
Audi enters the weekend ranked eighth in the Teams' Championship, with two points to their name.
