McLaren Reunites Legends and Future Stars for 1000th Race Celebration in Monaco
In Monaco, McLaren marked its 1000th F1 race with a gathering of past and present drivers, including champions like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The event underscored the team's rich history and collaborative spirit in the sport.
Monaco's Grand Prix weekend was more than just another race for McLaren; it was a celebration of their 1000th Formula 1 World Championship appearance, a milestone matched only by Ferrari. This coincided with the 60th anniversary of Bruce McLaren's 1966 debut in the M2B.
The team marked the occasion by assembling an impressive lineup of McLaren drivers past and present. Current drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri mingled with former champions such as Emerson Fittipaldi, Mika Hakkinen, and Lewis Hamilton. The guest list also included John Watson, Gerhard Berger, David Coulthard, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Fernando Alonso, among others.
Joined by team executives Zak Brown and Andrea Stella, as well as Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, the group gathered for a photo-op featuring the historic M2B alongside the current MCL40, decked out in a special 1000th race livery. Mika Hakkinen had the honor of taking the M2B for a spin, its vintage V8 engine echoing through the pit lane and drawing smiles from onlookers.
The event held particular significance for Zak Brown, a known enthusiast of F1's storied past. "It was awesome," he remarked, highlighting the exceptional turnout and the respect McLaren commands in the paddock. The presence of Hamilton and Alonso, despite their current affiliations, demonstrated a refreshing spirit of cooperation in the sport, something Brown believes should happen more often.
Brown also took the opportunity to unveil McLaren's new hospitality hub, a feat of logistics within the cramped Monaco paddock. "Our new team hub," Brown noted, "is a better working environment for everyone, and I'm excited about where the sport is heading."
The celebration underscored McLaren's dual focus on honoring its rich legacy while looking to the future, all within the glamorous backdrop of Monaco.
