Vasseur on Ferrari's Strategic Call to Pit Hamilton Under Safety Car
Fred Vasseur discusses Ferrari's decision to pit Lewis Hamilton under the Safety Car at Silverstone, a move that saw him lose second place to George Russell. Despite the setback for Hamilton, Ferrari celebrated Charles Leclerc's victory and assessed their ongoing progress this season.
Lewis Hamilton ended the British Grand Prix in third, with Charles Leclerc taking the win, as Ferrari's decision to pit Hamilton under the Safety Car saw him lose out to George Russell. Fred Vasseur, Ferrari's Team Principal, explained the reasoning behind the pit stop, which ultimately cost Hamilton a position as the race finished under neutralised conditions.
The weekend was largely a triumph for Ferrari, marking their second victory in three races, reinforcing their position as a key contender against Mercedes. Leclerc's win was a significant boost, albeit with some frustration over Hamilton's drop to third.
The Safety Car's appearance, triggered by Max Verstappen's spin, presented Ferrari with a tricky decision. While Leclerc could easily pit for fresh soft tyres to safeguard his lead, Hamilton's situation was more complicated. The team knew that pitting him would allow Mercedes to keep Russell out on track, leading to Hamilton being overtaken.
As the cars followed the Safety Car, Hamilton, armed with fresher tyres, was poised to challenge Russell. However, the race did not restart, leaving Russell in second place and Hamilton in third. Despite the lost position and points, Vasseur stood by the decision, emphasizing that, under those circumstances, it was the right call.
"You can debate whether pitting Lewis was the right move," Vasseur noted post-race. "But had we not pitted, Russell would have, and we’d have risked more with older tyres." He admitted they were caught off guard by the Safety Car's extended stay, expecting a restart that never came.
Silverstone demonstrated Ferrari's progress, despite a slip-up in Austria with tyre management. The SF-26 showed competitive pace, securing strong positions in qualifying. Vasseur remains cautiously optimistic, acknowledging their performance deficit, particularly on power-dependent tracks like Silverstone.
"We know we have a performance gap," Vasseur admitted. "But it pushes us to extract every fraction of a second. We made incremental improvements throughout the weekend," he added, noting the track's unique challenges beyond just engine power.
Looking ahead to Spa, Vasseur anticipates different challenges, especially with potentially varied weather. "There's no magic solution," he remarked. "It's about small gains adding up."
Meanwhile, Leclerc's return to form was perhaps the biggest takeaway. Vasseur dismissed any doubts about Leclerc's ability, highlighting his consistent performances and the confidence boost from the victory. "It wasn't just about car performance," Vasseur explained. "It was about confidence, and today's result helps tremendously."
