George Russell Struggles to Find Form in Challenging Monaco Qualifying

George Russell faced a tough qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix, unable to match his teammate's pace. The Mercedes driver admits he's grappling with a lack of confidence in the car.

George Russell was left pondering his performance after a difficult qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver admitted that he's struggling to find his rhythm, as he couldn't keep up with teammate Kimi Antonelli, who clinched pole position.

Antonelli seemed to have the upper hand throughout the weekend, topping the timesheets in the final practice and continuing his form into qualifying. Russell, however, seemed less assured, finishing sixth, and was nearly four-tenths slower than Antonelli.

When asked about his performance, Russell said, "I don’t really know. The last few races have been challenging just to get the laps together." Reflecting on the start of the season, he noted, "Every lap I did, practice or Quali, it was always P1 or P2, and now nothing’s clicking."

Russell suggested that his driving style may not be compatible with the current Mercedes car, and he acknowledged the need to adapt. "I'm not having a lot of confidence in the car right now," he explained. "I’ve got some ideas why that is, but I don’t know right now."

The 28-year-old is aware that adjustments are necessary, either in his driving or the car's development, to better suit his style. "We’ve done some good work to understand things with my driving style, but this car is not bringing out the best in me," he admitted. "I need to adjust to it, or make some development changes to help me drive more naturally."

Russell's candid reflections underscore the challenges drivers face when car performance and personal driving preferences are at odds. As he navigates these hurdles, he'll be keen to regain the confidence and form he displayed earlier in the season.
