Kimi Antonelli has silenced critics in his second F1 season by leading the championship, a feat Mercedes boss Toto Wolff attributes to resilience and instinct. Meanwhile, George Russell faces a tougher path, grappling with car confidence issues.
Kimi Antonelli's rookie year in Formula 1 had its ups and downs, but the young Italian is now leading the championship. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently shared insights into Antonelli's transformation and his current form.
Having joined Mercedes in 2025, Antonelli's debut season was a mix of promising starts and challenging European races. Despite these hurdles, he ended the year on a positive note and has since surged ahead, becoming the youngest championship leader in F1 history.
In a chat with _F1 TV_ after Antonelli secured pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix, Wolff highlighted the Italian's unshakeable confidence. "At his age, you don't overthink things," Wolff noted. "He didn't expect to lead a championship—he's racing with nothing to lose."
Wolff credited Antonelli's instinct and resilience, saying the lessons from a tough rookie year, including a nine-race point drought, have strengthened him. "We faced many doubters last year," Wolff admitted. "Some teams might have reassigned him, but we stayed the course. We balanced pressure with some ease, and now it's paying off."
Speaking to _Sky Sports F1_, Wolff explained how Antonelli's performance in Monaco Qualifying built steadily, gaining momentum after a solid Q1.
Meanwhile, George Russell's weekend was less straightforward. Ending up sixth in qualifying, Russell admitted confusion over his current struggles. Wolff discussed the challenges Russell faces, emphasizing it's not purely psychological. "He's robust and resilient, but luck hasn't been on his side," Wolff explained. "In Monaco, lacking confidence in the car means you can't push."
Wolff believes that with more time, Russell would have improved his position, but the lack of grip was a significant hurdle. "In Monaco, no grip means no pushing," he noted.
Looking ahead to the race, Wolff acknowledged Antonelli's task in defending against Red Bull's Max Verstappen from the front row. "Kimi needs to make himself as wide as a tourist bus around Monaco," he joked, underscoring the importance of a strong start.
Antonelli's journey from a doubted rookie to a championship contender highlights the importance of resilience and the right support. As for Russell, it's clear that with a bit of luck and regained confidence, he'll be back in the mix soon enough.
