Kimi Antonelli Seizes Belgian GP Victory, Eyes Championship Lead

Kimi Antonelli wasn't about to let any opportunity slip by at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver fought back from losing the lead to Max Verstappen at La Source, reclaiming it before Les Combes, and ultimately took the victory. This win, his sixth of the season, now puts him 50 points ahead of teammate George Russell, who had an early exit after a collision with Lewis Hamilton.

The Italian teenager's win at Spa-Francorchamps was his first since Monaco, following a couple of frustrating races marred by car issues. Despite a tricky start, Antonelli managed to regain control and secure the top spot, overcoming Charles Leclerc's strategic advantage during a Virtual Safety Car period.

"It's great to be back on the top step after a few difficult rounds," Antonelli remarked, acknowledging the challenges posed by Leclerc's pace. "We had to fight hard, but we managed to hold on."

Russell's retirement, caused by an incident with Hamilton, handed Antonelli a significant boost in the standings. Hamilton, who finished fourth, faces his own scrutiny with a potential penalty for an unsafe pit release.

Reflecting on his recent form, Antonelli noted, "The momentum has always been there. It's just about getting the result. Today we were a bit lucky with the championship situation, but that's why you've got to take every opportunity."

With a 45-point lead over Hamilton and a further five over Russell, Antonelli remains focused on maintaining his position. "Things can shift quickly," he said. "We just need to keep performing and see where we stand at the end of the year."
