Lando Norris Confident McLaren is Gaining Momentum After Barcelona Practice

Lando Norris is upbeat about McLaren's progress as he led the time sheets in Barcelona's FP2, edging out Mercedes' George Russell. Despite sitting out FP1, Norris feels the car is improving but acknowledges work remains to be done.

Lando Norris feels optimistic about McLaren's trajectory after he topped the charts in Free Practice 2 at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, even though he skipped the first session. With a slim margin of just 0.009 seconds, Norris edged out Mercedes' George Russell in the second practice session, showing McLaren's competitiveness on a traditional circuit often used for testing.

Norris' teammate, Oscar Piastri, also demonstrated McLaren's potential by finishing second in FP1 and third in FP2, trailing Norris by a mere 0.057 seconds in the latter session. The team appears to be on par with Mercedes as the Formula 1 circus returns to familiar ground after the unique challenges of Monaco and Montreal.

"It's not an easy track, even though it's one I know better than most," Norris commented. "It's faster and quite different from our recent venues. We're getting the car to work better, though it’s still not as good as we want." Norris has faced two consecutive race retirements due to technical gremlins, but is hopeful as the weekend progresses.

The hot weather added to the complexity of the sessions, with tyre degradation posing a problem for all teams. Saturday's qualifying is expected to bring even higher temperatures, further challenging the drivers and their engineers.

"We're up there with the competition we aim to beat," Norris remarked. "It's tough to gauge exactly where everyone stands with varying fuel loads and power settings, but the direction seems promising compared to recent races."

While pleased with the pace so far, Norris acknowledged that there are still aspects of the car's performance that need improvement. "We can't complain too much given the past month's struggles," he added. "Tonight, we'll focus on optimizing what we can for tomorrow."

As McLaren continues to fine-tune their car, Norris and Piastri will aim to build on their encouraging practice performances in the upcoming qualifying session.
