Monaco Qualifying: Antonelli Claims Pole, Edges Verstappen

Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, narrowly beating Max Verstappen. With overtaking a challenge on this iconic circuit, Antonelli's starting advantage could be crucial.

The sixth round of the 2026 F1 season unfolded in the glamorous yet unforgiving streets of Monaco, where Kimi Antonelli seized pole position for the first time. The young Mercedes driver outpaced Max Verstappen by a mere 0.043 seconds, a feat that underscores his remarkable form this season.

Antonelli's pole at Monaco, arguably the most coveted of the year, was earned through sheer grit. Verstappen was blisteringly fast, but Antonelli kept his composure to snatch the top spot. He now holds a 43-point lead over George Russell in the championship standings, starting five places ahead of him on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking.

Max Verstappen finds himself on the front row, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who has shown a return to form. Charles Leclerc rounds out the second row for Ferrari, though he might be ruing his Q3 performance that ended with a brush against the barriers.

Behind them, Theo Pourchaire and Russell are positioned to capitalize on any slip-ups from the front-runners. Meanwhile, McLaren's Lando Norris, last year's race winner, could only manage eighth, tucked behind teammate Piastri.

The session saw a few surprises, with notable eliminations in Q1 including Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez, and Fernando Alonso. Q2 claimed the likes of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, signaling an uphill battle for these drivers come race day.

Antonelli's performance, described by his race engineer Pete Bonnington as a 'magic lap', was a testament to the team's overnight improvements following a tricky Friday. For Antonelli, the challenge now is to convert this pole into victory, maintaining his championship momentum.

As the clock ticks down to the race start, all eyes will be on Antonelli. Can he fend off Verstappen's Red Bull and the fast-starting Ferraris? The answer awaits at lights out, 15:00 local time.
