Fernando Alonso Contemplates F1 Future Beyond 2026

Fernando Alonso is contemplating his future in Formula 1 as his contract with Aston Martin expires in 2026. While open to continuing in F1 or exploring other challenges like the Dakar Rally, he plans to decide after the summer break.

Fernando Alonso is keeping his options open regarding his future in Formula 1, as the 2026 season marks the end of his current contract with Aston Martin. Before the Miami Grand Prix, the two-time World Champion spoke candidly about potentially leaving the sport, although he won't be making any decisions until after the summer break. "I'm not sure," Alonso admitted when asked if he would exit F1 at the end of the season. "I'm open to everything. I think until probably after the summer break I will not really sit down with the team and make the decision. We need to see also how the car improves and how we see things into next year. I'm very relaxed."

Alonso, who has dabbled in various racing disciplines during his career, hasn't ruled out other motorsport challenges. "I will continue racing, if it's not F1 I will do Dakar [Rally]," he said. "Winning endurance racing, F1, and rally would be unprecedented for any racing driver, so it's something that is very appealing." Despite the potential shift, Alonso intends to stay active in the sport, whether behind the wheel or in another capacity with Aston Martin. "You'll see me in the paddock even if I stop racing," he noted.

The 44-year-old Spaniard previously took a break from F1 between 2018 and 2021, during which he won the Le Mans 24 Hours twice and clinched a World Endurance Championship title with Toyota. He also competed in the 2020 Dakar Rally, hinting at a possible return to the event after his F1 days conclude.

Alonso recently became a father, a change that has influenced his perspective on racing. "I have some thoughts, I cannot lie," he shared. "It does change the way you see life, but I want to race so my child can see me in action. I don't want to race for four or five years until he's aware of things, but I would like him to experience the paddock and maybe sit in my car."

The 2026 season has been anything but smooth for Alonso and Aston Martin, with reliability issues plaguing the car. So far, Alonso has finished only one of the three Grands Prix this season. Despite these challenges, he's optimistic about the team's progress. "We have a tough start to the season, but we are all embracing this challenge. We are together on this, Aston Martin and Honda. Hopefully, we can see some results and start having fun on the weekends," Alonso concluded.
