Damon Hill Champions Adrian Newey's Quest to Transform Aston Martin

Damon Hill has put his money on Adrian Newey, the genius behind Aston Martin's ambitious F1 project, predicting a breakthrough rather than a downfall. As Aston Martin navigates a rocky start to the 2026 season, Hill is convinced Newey's innovation will lead them to success.

Damon Hill, ever the optimist, is throwing his weight behind Adrian Newey's mission to steer Aston Martin and Honda away from the brink and into the winner's circle. The big question: will this trio become a dazzling "supernova" or implode into a catastrophic "black hole"? Hill, however, is confident that Newey can weather the storm.

The buzz leading into the 2026 Formula 1 season was palpable, as Newey unveiled the AMR26, Aston Martin's baby powered by a Honda engine. Yet, the debut has been less than stellar. Initial hiccups were anticipated, but Aston Martin's struggles have turned out to be more than just birth pains. Honda claims to have solved the pesky battery vibration issues, but in Japan, the team was the tortoise on track — slowest of the lot in qualifying.

Enter the wise Damon Hill and his reflections on Newey's daring approach to car design. "If you said to Adrian, ‘We’d be safe if we stayed within that circle,’ he’d go, ‘Well, what happens when you go outside the circle,’” Hill quipped on The Undercut podcast. Hill, who once teamed up with Newey at Williams, knows a thing or two about the designer's penchant for pushing boundaries.

Despite the AMR26's lackluster start, Newey's defense of his creation is unwavering, claiming it’s the “fifth-best” chassis out there. Of course, others in the camp, like Mike Krack, beg to differ, downplaying the vibrations as reliability rather than performance gremlins.

Hill believes Newey will eventually iron out these issues. "He’ll keep pushing in that direction," Hill mused. "Either it will never work – which is unlikely, because they nearly always do – but it will take some time.” Hill's concern is the patience of the Aston Martin team for Newey’s vision—will they stick with him or jump ship if results don't materialize soon?

Hill warns of potential disaster if Newey's competitive streak overrides sensibility, pondering, "Is there a point at which Adrian will bring about catastrophe, because he’s pushing it to an extent his competitiveness will get the better of him?" But just like Moses leading his followers, Newey must convince his team to see his vision of the promised land of racing glory.

Ultimately, Hill is convinced that Newey, Aston Martin, and Honda will become the "supernova" they aspire to be. He foresees a turning point in the season, showing that Newey’s path was always the right one.

As the standings go, Aston Martin is currently propping up the table alongside newbie Cadillac. Yet, Hill’s faith is unshakeable. "I mean, I have faith that he’ll do it. I get the sense with him, he knows that this will resolve itself," Hill adds.

So, F1 fans, will Newey deliver a thrilling comeback, or are we watching a melodrama unfold at Aston Martin? Stay tuned!
