Williams Bolsters Leadership with Piers Thynne from McLaren

Williams has hired Piers Thynne from McLaren as their new Chief Optimisation and Planning Officer. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance their team with senior recruits.

Williams has announced a key addition to their team, bringing in Piers Thynne from McLaren to fill the newly minted role of Chief Optimisation and Planning Officer. This appointment is part of a wider effort to strengthen their leadership ranks with experienced figures.

Thynne, who rose to Chief Operating Officer at McLaren during a successful period that saw the team clinch two Constructors’ Championships, will take on his new duties at Williams starting in August. The team outlines his responsibilities as streamlining processes, optimizing resources, and spearheading the use of advanced technologies like robotics and AI to modernize their operations.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Thynne said, "I'm thrilled to join Atlassian Williams F1 Team at such an exciting juncture. The team's ambition to excel in all areas and set new standards in the sport is clear, and I look forward to contributing to that vision." Reflecting on his time at McLaren, he added, "I enjoyed a fantastic period there, helping the team rise to the top, and I aim to replicate that success at Williams."

Thynne is one among several high-profile hires for Williams. Claire Simpson comes on board as Head of Aerodynamic Development following a 12-year stint at Mercedes, while Fred Judd joins from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains as Head of Performance Optimisation. Steve Booth has also been recruited from Alpine to serve as Head of Vehicle Engineering.

These appointments follow the recent addition of Dan Milner from Mercedes as Chief Engineer – Vehicle Technology. Williams is clearly on a recruitment drive, with promises of more senior figures joining from across the paddock in the coming months.

Team Principal James Vowles expressed his excitement about the new hires: "I'm thrilled to welcome Piers to the Atlassian Williams F1 Team as we continue investing in people, processes, and technology to compete at the front in Formula 1. Our ambition to build a championship-winning team is unwavering, and Piers brings invaluable recent experience in achieving exactly that." Vowles also emphasized the significance of the other new team members, stating, "We are attracting top strategic talent from throughout the paddock, which will reinforce the foundations we've established and propel us to the next level."
