Verstappen Urges Red Bull Forward Despite Canadian Podium

Max Verstappen secured his first podium of 2026 in Canada but insists Red Bull has room for improvement. Despite benefiting from rivals' misfortunes, Verstappen is focused on closing the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes.

Max Verstappen took the third spot on the podium at the Canadian Grand Prix, a result that initially might seem like a cause for celebration. However, the Dutch driver, ever the perfectionist, is convinced that Red Bull can still do better. The four-time World Champion had a solid race in Montreal, running in second place for a significant portion before Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari overtook him in the final laps.

The race wasn't without its share of drama, as Verstappen capitalized on strategic blunders by McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who started on intermediate tires in anticipation of rain that never arrived. Additionally, George Russell's retirement due to a power unit failure cleared another path to the podium for Verstappen.

"It was a bit of a surprise, to be honest," Verstappen admitted when asked about his podium finish. "The McLaren strategy didn't work out, and George's car failure definitely helped us. Still, it's a great result for us. Battling with Ferrari and not too far off Mercedes shows that we're moving in the right direction. Yet, there's room to improve, especially in understanding our grip issues on the medium tires."

Despite benefiting from the misfortunes of others, Verstappen and Red Bull appeared more competitive, having addressed some of the car issues that left him starting from P6. "In the last couple of weekends, we've been much closer to the front," Verstappen noted. "We were fighting with the midfield earlier, but now we're much closer to the leaders. We've made some real progress, but I know we can do better, and that's where our focus will be."

Red Bull's strategy and car performance improvements are evident, yet Verstappen's comments reflect a determination to bridge the gap to the frontrunners, Ferrari and Mercedes, as the season progresses. For now, a podium in Canada is a step in the right direction, but Verstappen is clearly setting his sights higher.
