Wolff Applauds Antonelli's 'Special' Victory in Miami

Toto Wolff praised Kimi Antonelli's impressive win at the Miami Grand Prix, marking his third consecutive victory. Despite early challenges, Antonelli managed to convert pole position into a win, drawing admiration from his team principal.

Toto Wolff had plenty to say about Kimi Antonelli's stellar performance at the Miami Grand Prix, where the young driver clinched his third straight victory by narrowly beating McLaren's Lando Norris. The Mercedes team principal admitted that no one could have predicted such a winning streak from Antonelli.

Despite a challenging start to the season, with rivals like McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari tightening the competition, Antonelli managed to shine. The Miami Sprint wasn't kind to Mercedes, with both Antonelli and George Russell missing out on podium finishes for the first time this year. McLaren capitalized with a 1-2 finish, forcing Mercedes to rethink their strategy.

Yet, Antonelli bounced back in qualifying, securing pole position ahead of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Although he had a less-than-ideal start and some downshifting concerns, he recovered to win the Grand Prix. "It's easier to slow someone down who's wild because you can't speed up a donkey," quipped Wolff. "For me, that was his best race so far; it reminded me of his karting days."

Antonelli's slow starts have been a recurring issue, often allowing competitors like Ferrari to gain an early advantage. Wolff, however, placed the blame on the team, not the driver. "It's not on him," he explained. "We've not been giving them the right tools, whether it's the clutch or grip estimates."

During the race, Norris pressured Antonelli, reducing his lead to just a second, but the Italian held firm and finished 3.264 seconds ahead. It wasn't a walk in the park, but it was a significant win, adding to his burgeoning reputation. Wolff is keenly aware of the need to keep Antonelli level-headed as the season progresses. "There's a risk he could get carried away," Wolff acknowledged. "Yet, his family will keep him grounded."

Reflecting on the season, Wolff said, "We've had ups and downs, moments of brilliance, and moments of frustration. This year, it's coming together. We've given him a good car and a strong engine, but his consistency every weekend is special."
