Lance Stroll, Max Verstappen and the GT3 Soap Opera

Lance Stroll is taking a detour from his Aston Martin woes by diving into the GT3 racing pool, with some guidance from F1's racing maestro Max Verstappen. As Aston Martin languishes at the back of the F1 grid, Stroll's GT3 debut might just be the adrenaline shot he needs.

It seems Lance Stroll is pulling a page from the racing maverick's handbook by shaking things up with a GT3 debut, and who better to get advice from than the maestro of speed himself, Max Verstappen? As Aston Martin deals with a rocky season—currently making themselves at home at the bottom of the Constructors' standings—Stroll is shifting gears, quite literally.

He's swapping the F1 paddock for the Circuit Paul Ricard, where he'll be piloting an Aston Martin GT3 machine with the Spanish duo of Roberto Merhi and Mari Boya. This six-hour nocturnal escapade is the opening act of the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe, kicking off at 6 pm and wrapping up under the midnight moon. Why the nighttime spectacle? Well, racing's cooler past sunset, both literally and figuratively.

While Verstappen won’t be joining him on this particular track, he’s been throwing some pointers Stroll’s way. "We talked about whom to contact," Stroll revealed, "and since he's already involved in GT racing, we discussed it a bit." In the shadow of Aston Martin’s less-than-stellar F1 performance, who wouldn't want a different set of wheels and a fresh mindset?

Stroll's adventure with Comtoyou Racing and the #18 Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 Evo began with a Prologue test at Paul Ricard. This isn’t his first dance with endurance races either; he’s already tangoed with the 24 Hours of Daytona back in 2016 and 2018. Clearly, Stroll is no stranger to switching gears and tracks when the F1 paddock takes a breather.

Amid Aston Martin’s AMR26 woes, Stroll muses, "this year we don’t have a very competitive car." That seems like a diplomatic understatement coming from a man who's been unable to see the checkered flag in an F1 race so far this year. Maybe a little GT3 action is just the pit stop he needs.

The F1 circus will resume in Miami in May, offering Aston Martin some time to ponder over their chassis and Honda power unit combo. Meanwhile, Stroll’s GT3 escapade is more than a side quest; it’s a chance to hit reset.

So, as Stroll gears up for the GT3 showdown with Verstappen’s whispered wisdom, one wonders if this adventure will offer the fresh perspective Aston Martin desperately needs. Perhaps a splash of night racing will reignite the spark in their F1 campaign. Until then, we watch and wait, because, in racing, fortunes can change faster than a pit crew tire swap.
