McLaren's decision to sideline their experimental rear wing during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend might have raised a few eyebrows, but there was sound reasoning behind it. Originally, the team planned to test the part during practice sessions. Yet, despite the grand unveiling, the wing never made it onto the track.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 2026 F1 regulations, teams are on a perpetual quest for performance tweaks, introducing various upgrades throughout the season. This year, the 'Macarena’ or 'flip-flop'-style rear wing has been a standout innovation. It cleverly rotates shut at the end of straights, potentially enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. Ferrari first showcased this technology, with Red Bull quickly following suit.
McLaren arrived in Austria with their own version, intended for a trial on Lando Norris's car. However, the test run was thwarted by a hydraulic leak during Free Practice 1, severely limiting the track time available. Compounding the issue, the rear wing did not pass the team's preliminary tests conducted on-site.
Neil Houldey, McLaren's Technical Director of Engineering, explained the situation: "We worked tirelessly at the factory to bring this part to Austria, but upon arrival, our further tests indicated it wasn't ready to run. In the end, it didn’t meet our standards, so we've decided to hold off and make improvements before its next outing."
While there was disappointment at the factory given the team's effort, Houldey emphasized the importance of valuable track time. "Although it was disappointing not to run it, the track time we got with the car we plan to use throughout the weekend was crucial," he noted.
Ultimately, McLaren chose to focus on maximizing their understanding of the current car setup, ensuring they gather as much data as possible for the ongoing development race. The experimental wing will have to wait for another day.
