Barcelona Proves a Sobering Reality Check for Red Bull, Says Mekies

Red Bull's performance at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix highlighted the team's challenges against Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren. Team Principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged the need for improvements, especially in handling high-speed tracks.

Red Bull found themselves lagging behind Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, a reality that Team Principal Laurent Mekies described as a 'reality check.' Max Verstappen, despite finishing fourth, was significantly off the pace, trailing race winner Lewis Hamilton by 40 seconds, aided only by Kimi Antonelli's late retirement.

Verstappen acknowledged the need for Red Bull to 'work harder' to close the gap to their rivals. Mekies admitted the team anticipated challenges at the high-speed Barcelona track, which exposed their shortcomings more than circuits like Monaco, where they had been more competitive.

"We expected this reality check," Mekies noted. "Barcelona's layout, with its long straights and high-speed corners, was always going to test us. Unlike Monaco, where we were competitive, here we were three or four tenths off what was needed to fight for the win."

Isack Hadjar's race was equally challenging. Starting from P6, he dropped outside the top 10 due to a poor start, although he eventually clawed back to finish sixth, thanks in part to retirements ahead.

Mekies highlighted Red Bull's ongoing struggles with race starts, a persistent issue this season. "We've had weak starts this year," he admitted. "As power unit manufacturers, we're learning the intricacies of balancing the chassis and power unit. It's a good engine, but with a narrow operating window, making things tricky."

Red Bull's efforts in year one of their power unit project continue to be a learning experience. While there's no denying the potential of their current package, Mekies and his team are aware there's work to be done to solidify their position at the top of the grid.
