Lewis Hamilton clinched his maiden victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Team Principal Fred Vasseur credits Hamilton's strategic brilliance and energy for guiding the team to triumph.
In a notable turn of events at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Lewis Hamilton secured his first win for Ferrari. Team Principal Fred Vasseur was full of praise for Hamilton's efforts, highlighting the Briton's meticulous behind-the-scenes work that culminated in this triumph.
Hamilton's weekend began with a narrow miss on pole position to Mercedes' George Russell. However, Hamilton and Ferrari adapted a daring three-stop strategy during the race. His pace after the second pit stop allowed him to close the gap to Russell, eventually taking the lead when Russell made another stop.
The race took another twist as a Virtual Safety Car period, triggered by Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin incident, allowed Ferrari to pit Hamilton under slower conditions. This enabled him to maintain his lead comfortably.
"It's a good feeling," Vasseur shared with F1 TV after Ferrari's first win since the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. He was particularly impressed with Hamilton's ability to manage the race dynamics, saying, "He was very outstanding today."
Hamilton has been vocal about the changes he's made at Ferrari, including a reshuffle of his engineering team and tweaking his pre-race preparations. During the race, his communication with the team was pivotal, ensuring their strategy was on point and knowing exactly what lap times were necessary to keep Mercedes at bay.
Vasseur acknowledged that while the strategy was executed well, it was Ferrari's improved pace that truly made the difference. "The strategy went very well today but it also went very well in the last couple of events when the pace was a bit less impressive and it was more difficult," he explained.
The victory also helped Hamilton cut down Kimi Antonelli's lead in the championship standings from 66 to 41 points, ending Mercedes' six-race winning streak.
Vasseur, however, remains cautious. "Honestly, I’m trying to calm down bad comments and too enthusiastic comments," he told Sky Sports F1. "Lewis is a bit emotional, the team is emotional and my job is to try to calm down everybody in both situations. For sure, it’s a huge push in terms of confidence for him this weekend. It will be a new start."
With this victory, Ferrari looks to carry the momentum forward as they prepare for the next race in Austria, keeping their expectations measured and their focus sharp.
