Lewis Hamilton is optimistic about Ferrari's chances at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix following a strong qualifying session. Starting from the front row, he aims to challenge pole-sitter George Russell on race day.
Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, is feeling optimistic ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. After a strong qualifying performance, he will start from the front row, just behind George Russell. Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, was only 0.064 seconds slower than the Mercedes driver, marking his best qualifying result for Ferrari.
Hamilton's recent form has been impressive, with second-place finishes in both Canada and Monaco. "All weekend we've been about four-tenths off Mercedes, so we thought that's where we'd land," Hamilton said. "But being just a tenth behind shows the hard work back at Maranello is paying off."
Ferrari appeared strong throughout qualifying, with Hamilton leading Q1 and teammate Charles Leclerc finishing second in Q2. However, Leclerc's crash at the start of Q3 set him back, while Hamilton maintained his form despite a less than stellar Free Practice 3 session earlier in the day.
Reflecting on the weekend's progress, Hamilton noted, "In FP3, I was easily four or five-tenths off and wondered where I'd find the pace. But after a break, I came back and topped Q1, feeling comfortable with the car's balance."
Hamilton acknowledged the challenge posed by Mercedes, congratulating Russell on his pole position. However, he remains determined, stating, "We’re in a good position to fight for tomorrow's race."
With Ferrari upgrades showing promise, Hamilton is hopeful that they can keep pace with Mercedes during the 66-lap race. "We’ve got to keep pushing and developing," he added, "and hopefully, we can squeeze a bit more out of the car tomorrow."
As the race approaches, all eyes are on whether Hamilton can convert his strong qualifying performance into a victory, demonstrating Ferrari's potential to challenge the front-runners.
