George Russell Reflects on Silverstone Sprint: 'P3 Was Within Reach'

George Russell wrapped up the Sprint at the British Grand Prix with a fourth-place finish, a position better than where he started but not quite what he hoped for. The Mercedes driver, reflecting on the race, candidly shared that P3 was likely within his grasp.

Starting from fifth on the grid after a challenging Sprint Qualifying, Russell made an impressive start, overtaking both McLarens early on and briefly holding third. However, his fortunes shifted as Lando Norris reclaimed P3, followed by Max Verstappen, who temporarily pushed Russell back to fifth.

Russell managed to regain fourth from Verstappen in the closing stages but couldn't bridge the gap to Norris, crossing the line just shy of another overtake. "Lap 1 was great," Russell noted, highlighting his early moves. "But then I got a bit vulnerable and lost positions on the straights."

While Russell lamented the missed opportunity for a podium spot—"P3 is probably where I should have finished"—he remained focused on the positives, acknowledging it was a step forward from his starting position.

Meanwhile, Mercedes' Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord expressed satisfaction with Russell's performance, emphasizing the importance of gaining positions. "He went from P5 to P4," Lord pointed out, noting Russell's late-race pace as a promising sign for the upcoming qualifying. "He was closing in on Lando, which shows good tire management and pace."

Lord also highlighted the challenges of navigating the Sprint's energy management and the back-and-forth nature of such battles. Yet, he praised Russell's calm and methodical approach, suggesting that with a better starting position, more could be achievable in the main race.

As the dust settles on the Sprint, Russell and his team remain optimistic about the next phase of the weekend, aiming to capitalize on their learnings for the main event at Silverstone.
