Sainz Highlights Williams' Drive to Meet Lofty Goals After Miami Success

Williams achieved a notable double points finish in Miami, but Carlos Sainz stresses the team’s ambition to push beyond current results. Despite a solid performance, Williams aims to address their car's shortcomings and improve further.

Williams had reason to celebrate after the Miami Grand Prix, with both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon crossing the finish line in the top ten. This achievement marks their best points haul this season. Yet, in typical fashion, Sainz isn't letting them rest on their laurels. He insists that Williams has "higher expectations" and is committed to improving their performance, having started the year on a shaky note.

As one of the early adopters of the new regulations, hopes were high for Williams to make a significant leap forward. Last year, they managed a respectable fifth in the Constructors' Championship, so the aim was to build on that momentum. However, the team has been grappling with a car that's a bit on the heavy side, resulting in a performance deficit, evidenced by only one points finish in the first three races.

In Miami, Sainz matched his personal best for the season, climbing four spots during the 57-lap race. "It was a very solid race for me," he noted, despite a few hiccups on the opening lap. "We showed good pace today, faster than the midfield, though still trailing Alpine. But P9 isn't where we want to be," Sainz admitted, highlighting the team's aspirations beyond just scraping points.

Williams finds itself eighth in the standings with five points. Sainz remains optimistic, saying, "We still have a lot of the year left to recover. We know what we’re capable of, and it’s about making sure we meet those expectations."

Meanwhile, Albon faced a mixed weekend. After a track limits violation demoted him from P14 to P19 for the Sprint, he managed to claw back to 15th in qualifying and ultimately finished 10th in the Grand Prix, earning his first point of the season. He shared, "It was hard work. We know Miami suits us well, so now we need to ensure our package maintains its performance in Canada."

Both Williams drivers had some lively exchanges with the likes of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was charging after an early pit stop. Albon, reflecting on his race, emphasized the importance of sustaining this momentum and understanding their car's new package better as they look forward to the next race.

In a sport where fortunes can change as quickly as the weather, Williams is keen to ensure their improvements aren't a one-off. With the Canadian Grand Prix on the horizon, they have a couple of weeks to analyze data and make necessary adjustments. The team at Williams is clearly determined to move beyond their current limitations and compete at a higher level.
