'Steady as She Goes': Vasseur Urges Ferrari to Keep Calm Amid 2026 Title Talk

Fred Vasseur has shared his perspective on Ferrari's trajectory this season after Lewis Hamilton secured a victory in Barcelona, sparking chatter about a potential title challenge in 2026. Hamilton, who had recently finished second in both Canada and Monaco, executed a bold three-stop strategy to outmaneuver the Mercedes duo at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. A timely Virtual Safety Car also played into Ferrari's hands.

This win, breaking Mercedes' streak, and Hamilton closing Kimi Antonelli's lead from 66 to 41 points due to Antonelli's retirement, have led many to speculate about Ferrari’s championship prospects. However, Vasseur remains focused on the long game, asserting, "Nothing changed today compared to last week in Monaco. The result is different; the outcome of the race is different."

He elaborated on the importance of keeping a level head: "The commitment hasn't changed from the team, from Lewis, or from Charles Leclerc. We need to stay calm. Racing isn’t suddenly magical just because we won today. The collaboration is improving, and we’re getting to know each other better every day."

Vasseur pointed to the race weekend's tight competition, where minor details made significant differences in qualifying positions, emphasizing the importance of track position and clean air. "I'm taking it as a mega positive result," he said, noting it as a reward for all involved but cautioning against seeing it as a drastic change in their situation.

Looking ahead, Vasseur is optimistic but measured: "We’re moving in the right direction. We had good weekends in Canada and Monaco, and our pace was strong from the start here. But this season is about development, not just a snapshot of Barcelona."

The Ferrari principal noted that while they brought new developments for Barcelona, maintaining momentum will depend on continuous upgrades. "It’s about the capacity of the team to develop," he explained. "We’ll bring more updates soon, perhaps in the UK. It’s all about development capacity."

When pushed on Ferrari's ability to support Hamilton in a title bid, Vasseur resisted speculation: "I’m not keen to answer those questions. Two weeks ago, everything was a disaster, and now we’re talking about the championship. That’s the worst way to approach it."
