Fernando Alonso clarifies that Aston Martin’s upcoming upgrade won't be the sole factor in deciding his future with the team. The Spaniard plans to assess multiple aspects, including personal racing aspirations, before making his decision.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the year, Fernando Alonso has been candid about his future with Aston Martin. Despite the anticipation surrounding the team's major upgrade at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alonso insists it won’t be the deciding factor for his 2027 plans.
Alonso, 44, has been the subject of much speculation regarding his next move, especially given Aston Martin's lackluster start this season. While he remains committed to the team in some capacity, he's been linked to other opportunities within the paddock. During the British Grand Prix's media day, he expressed optimism about the forthcoming upgrades but stressed that his decision will be based on more than just performance gains.
“It’s an exciting time for us,” Alonso remarked. “We didn’t start well this year, so we've waited for a comprehensive package, which is due in Budapest. The challenge is predicting how these complex technologies translate into lap times, but I’m eager to see the results.”
Yet, when asked if the upgrades would influence his decision, Alonso was clear: “It won’t be just about that. It’s a combination of factors. The sport itself, the energy it requires, and whether it’s still enjoyable are all part of the equation.”
Alonso also pointed out that improvements are needed not only in the chassis but also with the engine, which the team plans to address in upcoming races. “I feel confident in the team’s efforts,” he said. “But ultimately, I need to consider my own future and what will make me happiest next year.”
He hinted at other racing dreams, such as participating in the Dakar Rally or returning to endurance racing, especially if Max Verstappen shows interest. “I don’t want to wait until I’m 60 to try these things,” Alonso noted. “I need to prioritize what excites me most.”
As the summer break approaches, Alonso plans to weigh all these factors. Regardless of the Hungarian results, it’s clear that his choice will be guided by a broader perspective than just the immediate performance of his Aston Martin.
