Kimi Antonelli reflects on a chat with George Russell and Toto Wolff after their tense Sprint encounter in Canada. The young driver shares his thoughts on the race and his goals for Sunday's showdown.
Kimi Antonelli has lifted the lid on a conversation with George Russell and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff after a spirited Sprint race clash in Canada. Despite some on-track friction, Antonelli assured fans that everything is now "all clear" between him and Russell. The Italian, not one to hold grudges, emphasized that both drivers remain "free to race," albeit with a mutual respect that should keep the peace.
The Sprint race saw the Mercedes pair involved in a lively battle, which included a bit of contact and resulted in Antonelli losing a position. Not one to let things slide, the championship leader had a few choice words over the radio. However, with qualifying concluding later that day, it was Russell who edged out Antonelli for pole position by a mere 0.068 seconds.
When quizzed about whether he had time to hash things out with Russell and Wolff between sessions, Antonelli confirmed, "Yeah, of course, we had a chat with George and Toto, and now it’s all clear." He went on to explain, "We clarified about the race. We recognized our own mistakes, so now obviously we’re free to race, but of course, we need to race with respect."
As Sunday's race looms, the spotlight will be on the Mercedes duo to see if they can maintain this newfound harmony. Antonelli reflected on the qualifying session, which proved trickier than the Sprint qualifying, and couldn't help but wonder what might have been. "It’s the same gap as yesterday, so obviously it’s a pity, but I think overall it was still a decent session," he said.
He noted the difficulty in getting the tyres in the right window but remained optimistic. "That last lap, I finished it and then I was a bit… not too sure. It felt like ‘I wish I had another run,’ but it is what it is. George did a great lap, and now I will try to get it back tomorrow." With the Grand Prix fast approaching, Antonelli has his sights set on turning the tables and reclaiming that top spot.
