After a strong performance in Miami, McLaren's Andrea Stella discusses ambitions to defend their championship titles. Despite early challenges, the team's recent results boost their confidence for the season ahead.
Andrea Stella, the Team Principal of McLaren, is cautiously optimistic about the team's prospects of defending their championship titles after a promising performance in Miami. The weekend marked their best outing of the season, with Lando Norris claiming victory in the Sprint and both Norris and Oscar Piastri securing podium finishes in the main race.
Despite a rocky start to the season, including a no-show for both drivers at the Chinese Grand Prix, McLaren hinted at better things to come with Piastri's podium in Japan. Miami further boosted McLaren's morale, showcasing the potential of their newly-upgraded MCL40.
When questioned about the team's chances of retaining both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles, Stella remained guarded but hopeful. "It's still early days, just the fourth race," he noted. "We've only just rolled out our first upgrade, and while Miami suits us, we need to see how we perform elsewhere."
Stella emphasized the importance of continued development, pointing out that McLaren scored well even against the likes of Mercedes. "We’ve got a good chunk of points so far, and we know there’s room to develop our car further," he stated, adding that the team's strategy is to focus on the present while keeping an eye on long-term goals.
Acknowledging the prowess of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, Stella also lauded McLaren's driver lineup as "probably the strongest pair." He praised both Norris and Piastri for their driving quality, consistency, and teamwork, noting Norris's Sprint win and Piastri's podiums as evidence of their capabilities.
Currently, McLaren holds third in the Constructors’ Championship with 94 points, while Norris and Piastri sit fourth and sixth in the Drivers’ standings with 51 and 43 points, respectively. Stella is confident that with further improvements to their car, McLaren can capitalize on their driver strength and climb the rankings as the season progresses.
