Aston Martin is demanding significant progress from Honda's engines for the 2027 season or may consider alternative suppliers. The team, frustrated by current performance, seeks improvements to compete at the front of the grid.
Aston Martin has drawn a line in the sand for Honda, insisting on a major upgrade to their engine performance by the 2027 season opener. The team has been visibly frustrated with their current engine's lack of power, a sentiment echoed by Fernando Alonso's public criticisms over team radio in Singapore. Despite Adrian Newey's well-crafted chassis, Aston Martin finds itself languishing in P10 in the Constructors’ Championship, primarily due to the horsepower shortfall.
In light of these challenges, Aston Martin has reportedly explored alternative engine partnerships, holding discussions with Mercedes and even hinting at possible ties with Red Bull powertrains. However, they remain committed to Honda for now, provided that the Japanese manufacturer can deliver a "significant" improvement by the first race in 2027.
According to sources, Aston Martin expects Honda to engineer an engine capable of placing them within the top 10 in Bahrain. If these expectations aren't met, the team is ready to explore other options.
Despite the current tensions, Aston Martin and Honda will put on a united front at the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, which marks Honda’s 500th race in Formula 1. Celebrations are planned, with Lawrence Stroll, Adrian Newey, and drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll all expected to participate in a commemorative event.
The ultimatum underlines Aston Martin's ambition to rise up the pecking order and reflects a broader willingness to make bold decisions to achieve their goals.
