Brundle Pinpoints Bahrain as Turning Point for Russell's F1 Title Hopes

George Russell's championship aspirations took a major hit after an engine failure in Bahrain. Martin Brundle believes this was the decisive moment in Russell's 2026 title campaign.

George Russell's 2026 title dreams seem to have been dashed following a series of unfortunate events, starting with a DNF at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Martin Brundle, the former F1 driver turned commentator, has singled out this race as the moment Russell's championship hopes "went out of the window." At the Sepang circuit, Russell's engine failure expanded his deficit to Kimi Antonelli to 84 points, with Antonelli securing a second-place finish. This gap widened further to 89 points following the Sprint in Singapore.

Russell's troubles didn't stop there. Mercedes announced an engine penalty for the Singapore Grand Prix, forcing him to the back of the grid with a hefty 40-place grid drop. To add to the misery, Russell hinted at more penalties before the season concludes, stating, "Feels a little bit one thing after another right now, but that’s just how the cookie crumbles."

Before Bahrain, Russell's title chances were already slim; however, his victory in Azerbaijan had briefly reduced the gap to 66 points. The gap extended once more after Russell, having overtaken Max Verstappen at the start of the Singapore Sprint, crashed at the final corner on the opening lap due to slippery conditions.

With 175 points still technically available, Brundle has declared the championship race effectively over for Russell. He remarked, "In terms of his championship chances, I think they’re out of the window now. I think Malaysia was that moment." Brundle also noted that no other teams or drivers seem poised to challenge Antonelli consistently this late in the season.

Russell himself acknowledged the grim reality post-Bahrain, admitting his chances against Antonelli were "exceptionally unlikely." He lamented the lack of luck on his side, commenting, "A three-point loss being behind Kimi turned into an 18-point loss. Of course, if the issue was on the other side it would have been an 18-point gain. It’s a real shame, but that’s just how it is."

For now, it appears Russell's role is to support Antonelli in securing the title, while he focuses on maximizing his own results in the remaining races.
