Carlos Sainz Defends His Approach to Blue Flags After Antonelli Incident

Carlos Sainz argues for patience from F1 leaders with backmarkers, following a blue flag incident with Kimi Antonelli at the U.S. Grand Prix. Sainz, who has been on both sides of the lapping equation, highlights the difficulty in timing when to let faster cars pass.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz has called for a touch more patience from Formula 1's frontrunners when dealing with backmarkers. He insists that it's not always a simple task to clear the way when blue flags are waved, as evidenced by a recent incident at the United States Grand Prix involving Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.

Sainz, who has had his share of controversy with blue flags this season, found himself in the spotlight again in Austin. During the race, Antonelli, who was vying for his ninth win of the season and had a shot at the world title, came upon Sainz's Williams on Lap 36. The encounter resulted in Antonelli running off the track after locking up in Sainz's dirty air, prompting an exasperated reaction from the Mercedes driver.

Despite the hiccup, Antonelli went on to secure victory, finishing comfortably ahead of Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, Sainz, having suffered a broken front wing in an early scuffle with Arvid Lindblad, finished a distant 18th.

Reflecting on the blue flag situation, Sainz emphasized the challenge posed by the significant speed disparity between the top teams and his Williams. "We're doing the best we can," he remarked, noting that timing the moment to let faster cars by isn't as straightforward as it seems. "To the top guys, I've been in both positions. I’m being lapped now, and I can tell you, it’s not easy for the ones having to let people by."

Sainz's plea for understanding comes amid criticism from some quarters, although he remains steadfast in his view that the process isn't always as clear-cut as it appears from the front of the grid.
