Charles Leclerc clawed his way from last to fourth in Sepang, enduring a challenging race filled with early setbacks. Despite the mixed conditions and strategy blunders, Ferrari emerged with a respectable result and some lessons learned.
Charles Leclerc's afternoon in Sepang was more of a rollercoaster than a race. The Ferrari driver found himself at the back of the pack early on due to a series of mishaps, yet managed to cross the finish line in fourth place, an outcome that seemed unlikely given the start.
In the opening stages, Leclerc lamented that "everything that could have gone wrong...did go wrong." He, along with teammate Lewis Hamilton, was caught out by Ferrari's initial decision to fit soft compound tyres on a track that was still too damp. This strategic misjudgment was compounded by an unfortunate tangle with Nico Hulkenberg, which left Leclerc with a puncture and a damaged front wing. A sluggish pit stop to switch to intermediates and replace the wing sent him out in last place.
Despite the inauspicious start, Leclerc's fortunes turned around as the race progressed. "Everything that could have gone right in the second part of the race went right for us," he reflected. "At the end of the day, I think P4 on my side was the best I could do." Leclerc admitted to struggling with the car's balance and dealing with inconsistencies, which made maximizing its potential challenging.
Hamilton, who dropped to 17th after starting on the softs, showcased a remarkable recovery to secure a podium finish. This double comeback by the Ferrari drivers expanded their lead over McLaren in the Constructors' Championship and slightly closed the gap to Mercedes.
The weekend wasn't just about on-track challenges. Off-track, the team faced speculation about Team Principal Fred Vasseur's future, which Leclerc addressed. "Fred is doing absolutely everything to bring the team back to the top," he stated, emphasizing the unity within the team despite external noise.
Leclerc was pleased with the outcome given the circumstances, but acknowledged that the team needs to learn from this race to avoid similar situations in the future. "Relatively happy that we have done the best we could at a weekend like this," he remarked, hoping that the performance would quell some of the "silly rumours" surrounding Ferrari.
Ultimately, while the race was far from perfect, Ferrari's performance in Malaysia demonstrated resilience and potential, key ingredients for future success. Leclerc and his team will undoubtedly use this experience as a stepping stone to refine their strategies and aim for the top step of the podium.
