Colton Herta to Drive for Cadillac at US Grand Prix Amid F1 Uncertainties

Colton Herta is set to drive for Cadillac during the first practice at the United States Grand Prix, as his F1 future remains in question. The American driver steps in for Sergio Perez at the Circuit of the Americas.

Colton Herta will make an appearance for Cadillac at this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, a move that comes as his future in Formula 1 remains shrouded in uncertainty. The former IndyCar star is set to drive in the first practice session at the Circuit of the Americas.

Cadillac has chosen the US Grand Prix to fulfill one of its mandatory rookie sessions, with Herta stepping in for Sergio Perez. This will mark Herta's fourth outing of the year, following previous runs in Barcelona, Hungary, and Monza. The team is looking to build on its momentum from a strong performance in Singapore, where both cars finished the race.

"Driving the MAC-26 in front of American fans at COTA is going to be special," Herta said. "I have fond memories here, having won my first IndyCar race at this track in 2019. Getting behind the wheel of an F1 car on this circuit feels like coming full circle."

Herta has been honing his skills with Cadillac, aiming to provide valuable feedback and data to support the team throughout the weekend. "My goal for Friday morning is simple: execute the test program cleanly, help the engineers gather good data on the setup, and hand the car back to Checo with useful feedback," he added.

Despite his transition from IndyCar to Formula 2 this year to earn the superlicence points needed for an F1 drive, Herta has found himself mired in the midfield and out of championship contention. "I’ve always known it would be tough," Herta admitted last month. "I've competed against drivers who’ve thrived in Formula 2 and those who’ve transitioned successfully to IndyCar. I knew the challenge was real."

As for continuing in Formula 2, Herta has made it clear: "I think we’ll just have to wait and see. But I’m not interested in another year in Formula 2."
