Diverging Views: Norris and Piastri Reflect on McLaren’s Sprint Qualifying in Singapore

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had mixed reactions to their Sprint Qualifying performances in Singapore. While Piastri was content with his fourth-place finish, Norris felt he could have done better.

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris of McLaren found themselves in different frames of mind following Sprint Qualifying at the Singapore Grand Prix. Piastri managed to secure fourth place, while Norris ended up fifth after a challenging session.

The session saw Norris initially take the top spot in SQ3, but strategic timing by Ferrari and Red Bull left him shuffled down to P5. Piastri, however, managed to improve his time on his second lap, moving ahead of Norris to claim fourth. The Australian was pleased with his performance, stating, “I think that was more or less what we could’ve done.” He noted that the soft tires brought the car to life, despite earlier struggles on the mediums.

Piastri, who had previously mentioned issues at Turns 2 and 3, described the difficulties he faced on the track. He acknowledged some improvement but noted that the general feel of the car remained consistent with past experiences. “You’ve got to really wring its neck to be quick,” he added, appreciating the added grip from the softs.

Norris, on the other hand, was less satisfied. Despite improvements in straight-line speed from the last race in Sepang, he felt his personal performance was lacking. He dismissed the notion that tough track conditions were to blame, candidly admitting, “I just don’t think I put together a very good lap – that was all. No excuse.”

The Briton acknowledged the team's progress but remained critical of his own execution. “I think from what I’ve seen so far, a lot of things seem good. We seem closer as a team. It’s just simply that I didn’t do a good enough job,” he concluded.

Both drivers will undoubtedly be looking to capitalize on their starting positions in the upcoming Sprint race, aiming to turn their mixed emotions into stronger performances.
