Fernando Alonso voiced his displeasure with the Honda engine during the Singapore Grand Prix, citing deployment issues. The Spaniard's frustrations highlight challenges faced by Aston Martin in the 2026 season.
Fernando Alonso's radio outburst during the Singapore Grand Prix was hard to miss, as he exclaimed "ridiculous this engine" over the team radio. After the race, the Aston Martin driver elaborated on his frustration, particularly with the Honda engine's deployment issues, which he blamed for costing him valuable positions.
Both Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll began the race from the pit lane due to work done on their AMR26 cars under parc ferme conditions. Stroll, however, did not finish, marking his 11th DNF of the season, while Alonso managed to complete the race in 16th place, albeit with some grievances.
Alonso's frustration was evident when a Cadillac pulled away and a Red Bull zipped past him, prompting his candid radio message. "Haha. Energy. It’s so ridiculous this engine," Alonso quipped, highlighting his issues with the current F1 2026 power units, which blend electrical and internal combustion power almost evenly.
Alonso was particularly critical of the Honda engine's deployment, noting it failed to deliver power at crucial moments, especially following virtual safety cars, which significantly hampered his race. "We lost a lot of places and a lot of ground with the lack of deployment," he remarked, urging for an investigation into the matter.
Despite these setbacks, Alonso reflected positively on the first triple-header of the 2026 season. He achieved Aston Martin-Honda's best result so far with an 8th place finish at the Sepang-hosted Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. "We took points in Malaysia, so that was a good triple," Alonso noted, while acknowledging the demanding conditions faced by the team.
Currently, Alonso has been responsible for all seven points scored by Aston Martin-Honda in 2026, and the team sits 10th in the Constructors' standings, trailing Williams by five points.
