Fernando Alonso reflects on Aston Martin's performance issues in Singapore, emphasizing the need for improvement with Honda. Despite challenges, he remains optimistic about future progress.
Fernando Alonso is no stranger to the ups and downs of Formula 1, and after a tough outing at the Singapore Grand Prix, the Aston Martin driver is calling for a closer look at what went wrong. While the race didn't go as planned—Alonso finished a disappointing 16th—he insists there's a path forward for both the team and engine supplier Honda.
Alonso noted that something within the Honda power unit didn't quite hit the mark in Singapore, citing troubles with driveability and energy deployment. As he prepares for the United States Grand Prix, Alonso is looking for answers and improvement before the next set of races.
Reflecting on the Singapore performance, Alonso admitted, "It was relatively disappointing. Singapore, at least for myself, I was expecting a little bit more." The Spaniard is keen to understand what exactly went awry and what could be done differently if faced with a similar situation.
"Sometimes you expect big things on a race weekend and you don’t deliver. Some others you don’t expect anything, and it’s the best result of the year," Alonso mused, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the sport. With the Circuit of The Americas up next, he remains optimistic. "This is a very nice track, nice layout, and if we start with the right foot tomorrow, maybe we’ll have a good weekend. That’s the aim."
Honda, on their part, identified that a new turbocharger introduced in Singapore didn't entirely solve the lag issues, largely due to the circuit's unique layout. However, after a thorough check back at Honda’s Sakura base, no major problems were found with the power units.
Alonso remains unfazed by the situation, stating, "It’s not a concern." He acknowledges that the partnership between Aston Martin and Honda has had a challenging start but is confident in their ability to improve. "We know what we have to improve, what we need to improve, and things are very clear. We are all together, and I think there are good things coming for the future."
Alonso emphasized the importance of understanding the problems and areas needing improvement, noting that both the car's chassis and engine require enhancements. "We need to go faster in the corners and we need to go faster on the straights. That’s the way it is in Formula 1. That’s what we see on the GPS. If we compare to the fast cars, we need to improve in every area, and we are working on that."
Currently, Aston Martin sits 10th in the Constructors' standings, trailing Williams by five points. While the journey has been challenging, Alonso's focus remains on maximizing performance in the remaining races and seizing any opportunities that arise.
In the world of F1, where fortunes can shift as quickly as a pit stop, Alonso's experience and optimism will be crucial for Aston Martin as they navigate the remainder of the season.
