Ferrari Braces for Potential Struggles at Mexico City GP Due to Engine Challenges

Ferrari's recent engine simulations have raised concerns about their performance at the Mexican Grand Prix, where high altitude could impede their turbocharger efficiency. Despite recent podium successes, the team is apprehensive about maintaining their standing in the Constructors' Championship.

Charles Leclerc’s podium finish at the United States Grand Prix was a morale booster for Ferrari, but as the team heads to Mexico City, apprehensions are surfacing. The upcoming race, part of a grueling triple-header, might prove a tough ordeal for the Scuderia due to the high altitude of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. This track, situated 7,350 feet above sea level, poses a unique challenge due to its thin air, which puts extra stress on engines.

Ferrari’s engine simulations suggest that their smaller turbocharger may struggle under these conditions. Despite the team's success with recent aerodynamic upgrades, which helped Leclerc secure a podium in Austin, the Mexican Grand Prix presents a different kind of test. While Ferrari's wind tunnel and simulator results aligned well for the Circuit of the Americas, the high-altitude conditions in Mexico could reveal a significant weakness.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli's commanding victory in Austin has positioned him to potentially clinch the championship in Mexico if he can outscore his Mercedes teammates by a slim margin. Meanwhile, Ferrari is focused on damage control, hoping to protect their second place in the Constructors’ standings. With Mercedes holding a comfortable lead, Ferrari must fend off challenges from Red Bull and McLaren, who are level on points.

Ferrari’s decision to delay the introduction of a larger turbocharger until 2027 could come under scrutiny once again. The team had previously considered modifying their turbo when they rolled out the ADUO2 engine upgrade at Monza but opted against it due to concerns over reliability. As the Mexican Grand Prix approaches, Ferrari faces a critical test of their engine's capabilities, one that could have significant implications for their championship aspirations.
